Plants form a low clump of bold, leathery green leaves, which often turn bronze during winter. Short stems of magenta-pink or white flowers rise above the shiny foliage in early to mid spring. Plants are evergreen, and in spring benefit from some shearing of old dead leaves. While good soil will be rewarded, Bergenia are pretty tough and can grow in almost full sun-shine as well.

Bergenia Eroica (shown on left) is one of our favourites.
