Amaryllis Care and Planting
1. I highly recommend you wet promix type soil well beforehand by adding water to it and allowing it to sit for several hours or overnight.
2. Add about half the soil to the pot. The pot should not be too much bigger than the bulb.
3. Carefully spread the roots on the Amaryllis bulb and place it on the soil.
4. Add the rest of the soil, be sure that the bulb is no more than 2/3 buried (think of a lady in an old fashioned very low cut dress, with shoulders bared).
5. Water the bulb in. If soil has been pre moistened then this should be easy, simply water lightly (about 1 cup?). If soil was not wet to start, then it will need double watering to settle the bulb (place in sink, water well, wait, then water again after 5 minutes, repeat until water runs out bottom)
6. Grow your Amaryllis in good light, ideally close to an east window. Water sparingly, once a week or less. In a couple of weeks it should start to send up leaves and flower spikes. The flower grows quickly, ideal for a time lapse photography project.
7. These bulbs will likely send two or even three stalks up.
8. Once all the flowers on the stalk have faded and fallen off, you can cut the top off of the flower stalk, removing the seeds.
Fertilize if possible with Miracle-Grow or similar soluble fertilizer. It is very important to let the leaves grow for at least 3 months after flower.
9. By September at the latest, cut all leaves off the bulb and allow it to rest dry in a cool dark place for at least 6 weeks. If you forget to water it for a long time this may happen naturally, just cut off the brown leaves and shove the pot in a dark closet for a couple of months.
10. Bring it out about 6 weeks before you want bloom. Usually after two seasons the bulb could use new soil and extra fertilizer.
