Design Principles
KEEP IT
SIMPLE |
|
|
For
ease of maintenance, as well as visual
impact, keep lines of garden simple. Think
about mowing patterns, access to hose,
soil quality. Use hard edges to define the
space, ideally with paths along outside
edges to keep lawn grass as far as
possible from gardens. |
KNOW YOUR
CONDITIONS, STAY WITHIN THEM |
Pick
your battles. Don't try to make things fit
into the wrong space. If the window is 4
feet up, plant something that stays under
4 feet. If you are gardening a sloped
area, pick plants that are drought
tolerant. If you have heavy shade, find
plants that like that. Group plants with
similar needs; put water-loving plants
near each other, within easy reach of the
hose. |
USE LOTS |
|
|
For
the best visual effect as well as calm,
plant several of each variety you pick.
Collecting one of everything can be fun,
however the final design effect can be
chaotic. Use something to bring it all
together. Nature designs with quantity. |
